Top 3 satellite frequency bands used today

The applications and prominence of Satellite Connectivity in Africa have increased considerably over the last few decades. Today a variety of satellite frequency bands are used for this connectivity. These bands additionally have been given distinctive designations, so that they can be referred to easily.  Higher frequency bands are the ones to provide access to wider bandwidths. But they are also more susceptible to signal degradation due to ‘rain fade’.

Popular satellite frequency bands are:

  • The Ku band: This band has particularly become widespread with the use of VSAT Very Small Aperture Terminal). The frequency level of the Ku-band makes it possible to achieve high efficiency, and maintain levels of availability above 99.5%.
  • The Ka band: This band works with shorter waves and can reach great efficiencies. The use of Ka-Band in Africa is particularly common in small businesses and residences.
  • The C band: VSAT C is generally used in areas that are subject to tropical rainfall, as it is much less susceptible to rain fade than Ku-band.
