Different Types of Internet Connections Available in Africa
Internet connectivity is very
limited in Africa due to the sole reason being that there is very low
penetration rate of internet in Africa when compared to the rest of the world.
Internet penetration is measured by various parameters such as number of ISP subscriptions,
the overall number of hosts, the overall available bandwidth, IXP- traffic and
many others which cumulatively present the figure that Africa is way behind the
digital advancements as seen in the rest of the world. Although, Africa is still behind the world in terms of Internet but there are
different mediums through which people access the internet. Some of them being:
●
C band
in Africa is a solution for Internet
connectivity provided by Sat-space. It was one of the first bands to be used
for satellite communication and is less prone to weather conditions due to the
larger dish used.
●
VSAT or Very
Small Aperture Terminal is the most popular internet service method. VSAT
in Africa provides access to very high quality
internet connection even to the remotely accessible areas.
●
Africa has an
initiative called the East Africa Submarine Cable System which was born out of
the desire to remove digital marginalization of Africa. This provides Internet
connectivity to the eastern parts of Africa viafibre optics.
●
Broadband
Internet in Africa is another
medium through which people can access the Internet. Though it is not so
widespread as of now, it still has become an important medium after VSAT
through which people are accessing the Internet.
Africa is emerging in the digital
world and is very far behind other countries in terms of internet connectivity.
In Africa itself, many countries do not have internet facilities available even
for the so-called urban population. Much is to be done for Africa to provide
better connectivity.
